Good articles on securing those Christmas computers
By Peter M. Abraham
December 2003
Chances are high you may have plugged that new computer
you received at Christmas to the Internet; but, in any event you may want to
review the following two articles:
One thing I cannot stress enough is the total avoidance of
the "I'm such a newbie on the Net, and have nothing of value on my computer;
no one would want to hack into my personal computer."
Please, erase all such thoughts from your head, and say to
yourself 10,000,000 times that "If I don't take solid measures to protect my
personal computer, I could be either be in a misery of pain or putting some
one else through a misery of pain!"
Even if there are zero shreds of your personal information
on your personal computer, a hacker could use your personal computer to
commit one or more felonies!
You have a responsibility to protect yourself, your
family, your business, your customers, and the other people on the Net by
making sure your personal computer, your network, etc. is safe.
Consider it similar to digging your own water well where
your well would have to interconnect with all of your neighbors. If
you neglected taking care of your well, and an infection got into your well,
it could kill all of your neighbors.
Now, I'm not stating that your unprotected or poorly
secured personal computer will result in the death of anyone.
However, I've seen enough zombie personal computers that
are owned by hackers that it makes my hair stand on end.
Please don't be the next victim or unintentional
accomplish concerning computer crime.
Thank you. |
