Can you be too
secure?
By Jake Winemiller
With the world climate ever-changing, security has shot
to the top of many concern lists. It’s tough to feel safe in general
sometimes, and in our industry, it’s no different.
Cyber Crimes are on the rise and they will continue to
rise.
Many companies feel they are safe because they aren’t
Fortune 500 and don’t house much, if any, sensitive information, but that
isn’t always the goal of your everyday hacker or cyber-terrorist.
Just look at what some legislators and industry
professionals are saying about this growing problem:
“Mr. Edwards (Senator John Edwards, D-NC) noted that
most Americans caught up in the grave aftermath of September 11 never
realized that only a few days later a Pakistani group hacked into two of the
U.S. government's Web services, declaring "cyber-jihad" against the United
States . . . We now live in a world where a terrorist can do as much damage
with a keyboard and a modem as with a gun or a bomb.” -The Washington
Times, 2/4/03
"Criminal activity on
the Internet is growing — not steadily, but exponentially, both in frequency
and complexity. Criminals are getting smarter and figuring out ways to beat
the system." -Larry Ponemon,
chairman of the Ponemon Institute, an information management group and
consultancy.
“The proposed budget includes increases of $40.1
million and 113 positions -53 of them FBI agents-for the Computer Intrusion
Program to fight cyber-crime and cyber-terrorism.” -United Press
International, 2/3/03
“Thieves are not just diverting cash from company bank
accounts, these experts say. They are pilfering valuable information like
business development strategies, new product specifications or contract
bidding plans and selling the data to competitors.” -The New York Times,
